Although Bill Keith did a lot to promote banjo tablature, the standard was pretty much in place when Pete Seeger published his "How to Play the 5-string Banjo." This is not to subtract from or diminish the Keith contribution(s) one single bit. Earl Scruggs had little, if anything, to do with tabulature at all. In fact, once, when I was at Earl's house in 1965, I asked him what he called a certain "roll." He told me that he had never even heard of a roll until Bill Keith showed him all of the stuff he had written down, and explained what a roll was.
